Parts We Carry
Most of Solana Beach's housing centers on 1976, which puts a good share of the original panel sets and track hardware still in place almost fifty years later. Nobody swaps a working garage door section just because it's old, so what we find on a service call is often the factory door with one or two replacement panels bolted in from a prior dent repair, mismatched in color and sometimes in gauge. We carry steel and aluminum panel sections sized for the doors common to that build era, plus the end stiles, hinges, and roller brackets that tend to crack or bend before the panel itself gives out. If a full matching set isn't something we stock on the truck, we order it rather than hand you a visibly different panel - a mismatched section on an otherwise original door looks worse than the dent did. That ordering step does add a few days to some jobs, and we'll tell you up front if that's the case rather than push a patch that won't hold up.
Why It Happens Here
A 1976 door has usually been painted over once or twice, and that paint hides hairline rust along the bottom panel long before it becomes a visible hole. Lower panels take the brunt of sprinkler overspray and the daily opening and closing cycle, so they're almost always the first section to need work, even when the upper panels are sound. We also see impact damage - a trailer hitch, a bike, a trash can caught by the wind - concentrated on that bottom third, since that's the part of the door within reach of everyday bumps. The mild coastal temperate conditions through this part of the service area mean the doors aren't fighting extreme heat or cold cycling, so when a panel fails here it's almost always mechanical damage or slow-building corrosion rather than warped wood or heat-cracked vinyl.
What the Fix Involves
We remove the damaged section, which on an original 1976 door usually means backing out hinges that have been painted over or slightly rusted into their threads - that step alone can take longer than the panel swap itself. Once the section is out, we check the stiles and the track alignment on either side, since a dented panel often means the door's been running slightly bent for a while, loading the rollers unevenly. The new or matched panel goes in, hinges get reset or replaced if the old hardware is stripped, and we balance the door again before calling the job done, since a heavier or lighter panel than original changes the spring load even slightly. If the rest of the door is original hardware from the same era, we'll flag anything close to failing - a spring or cable with the same age as the panel we just replaced isn't far behind it.
Booking a Visit
We cover Solana Beach from our Vista shop, about 14 miles out, which puts it among the farther points we service alongside Fallbrook and Valley Center. There's no branch or standing crew in town, so we schedule the trip when we book the job rather than promise a same-day window we can't guarantee from that distance. Bring us the panel size, the door's approximate age, and a photo of the damage if you can, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a panel job or something bigger. See our Solana Beach service page for what else we cover in town, or check our Vista panel replacement page for how this same job runs closer to the shop.
